Overview

Three ways to trigger. One app.

Awan fires a reminder the moment you arrive at or leave a place, at the times of day you choose, or when your iPhone connects to (or disconnects from) your car — plus a built-in scanner to pull text out of documents and signs.

Getting Started

Two permissions. That's all.

Awan requires Location and Notification access to work reliably in the background.

Location Access
Location permission
Why "Always"? iOS stops geofence monitoring when the app only has "When In Use" access. Always access is the only way reminders fire reliably in the background.
Notification Access

A notification prompt appears at the same time. Tap Allow to receive reminder alerts.

Permission Status

Check both permissions anytime under Settings → Permissions.

Creating a Reminder

Steps to your first reminder.

Tap + and Awan first asks what should trigger the reminder — Location, Time, or Car. The edit screen then adapts to your choice. Steps 3 and 4 below (location & radius) apply only to Location triggers.

1

Open the Add Screen & Pick a Trigger Type

Tap + in the top-right corner of the Home screen (or New Reminder at the bottom of the list). A sheet appears first asking what should trigger the reminder — Location, Time, or Car. The fields on the following edit screen adapt to your pick.

2

Enter Title and Description

  • Title (required) — e.g. "When arriving home"
  • Description (optional) — shown in the notification body

Trigger Types Explained

The trigger type you chose in Step 1 determines how and when the reminder fires:

Trigger type chooser
Trigger TypeFires when
📍 LocationYou arrive at — or leave — a place you pick on the map. Choose Arriving or Leaving with the pill at the top of the map.
⏰ TimeAt one or more specific times of day. Add up to 15 fire-at times; each row in the Schedule card shows a time you can tap to edit.
🚗 CarWhen iPhone connects to — or disconnects from — your car's Bluetooth or CarPlay. Optionally pin to a nearby saved location so it only fires there.

For Location triggers, the Arriving / Leaving pill floats at the top of the map. Tap either option — the circle updates instantly to visualise your selection.

Configure Alert Options

Alert options

The main Alert Options card on the edit screen carries a single toggle:

OptionBehaviour
UrgentLoud alarm — plays even in Do Not Disturb or Silent mode. Off = regular notification

Active, Repeat Until Acknowledged, Complete on Open, and the full Schedule live in Advanced Settings — see Step 7 below.

Use Urgent sparingly. It bypasses Do Not Disturb.

Advanced Settings & Schedule (Optional)

Advanced Settings and schedule

The Advanced Settings button (the card with the sliders icon at the bottom of the form) opens a sheet with the secondary toggles and the Schedule card:

OptionBehaviour
ActiveWhen on, monitoring begins immediately after saving. Turn off to save without starting monitoring
Repeat Until AcknowledgedSends up to 5 follow-up notifications at the chosen interval (1, 2, 5, or 10 min) until you open one
Complete on OpenWhen on, tapping the notification marks the reminder as done. Overrides the global setting in Settings

The Schedule card controls when the reminder is allowed to fire. For Time triggers it appears inline directly under Alert Options on the main form. For Location and Car triggers it lives inside the Advanced Settings sheet.

Schedule TypeBehaviour
Every DayFires on any day the trigger condition is met
WeekdaysChoose specific days of the week — only fires on the days you select. An optional From/To date range can bound it further
Custom (date range)Pick a From and To date — e.g. today through 7 Dec. The reminder fires every day in that range and auto-deactivates after the end date. Set From = To for a single day

Time Window — enable the toggle, then pick a start time and end time. The reminder will only fire while the current time falls within that window.

Leave Schedule on Every Day and Time Window off for reminders that should fire any time the trigger condition is met.

Scan Text

Pull text out of the real world.

Awan includes a built-in scanner that extracts text from documents, signs, and handwriting in Arabic and English — right on device.

Opening the Scanner

Tap the Scan Text tab at the bottom (the viewfinder icon, between Saved Locations and Settings).

Scanning
  1. Point the camera at the text. Recognised text is highlighted live — tap a highlighted block to select just that part.
  2. Tap Capture to grab everything in view, or Close to exit the camera.
  3. Prefer a photo you already have? Use the photo picker to scan an image from your library.

Free tier: 1 reminder + 1 saved location (plus 20 free auto-logged parking records and 20 free text scans). Delete your free reminder and you can add a different one for free. Subscriptions come in Monthly and Yearly plans, each with a 7-day free trial on first subscription — no charge until the trial ends. Users who purchased the app before the subscription model launched receive free Legacy access forever.
Notifications

How your reminders reach you.

How a reminder fires
  1. The reminder's trigger condition is met:
    • Location — you enter (or exit) the radius and iOS detects the geofence boundary crossing
    • Time — the clock reaches one of the reminder's fire-at times on a scheduled day
    • Car — your iPhone connects to (or disconnects from) your car's Bluetooth or CarPlay
  2. Awan sends a notification with the title and description
  3. If Repeat Until Acknowledged is on, up to 5 follow-up alerts fire at your chosen interval until you open one
Dismissing one fired notification (or one fire time) never cancels a reminder's other fire times or its future days — only the follow-up repeat chain for that fire stops.
Tapping a notification

Opens the app directly to that reminder's detail page, regardless of what was open.

Notification banner
Complete on Open
SettingWhat happens when you open the notification
OnReminder is marked done + detail page opens
Off (default)Detail page opens, reminder stays active
CarPlay

Your reminders on the road.

When your iPhone is connected to a CarPlay-enabled vehicle, Awan shows today's reminders on the car's screen — no need to touch your phone.

Today's Reminders List

The CarPlay screen shows all reminders scheduled for today as a single, unified list — no section headers. Each row carries a leading icon so you can tell the trigger family at a glance:

IconTrigger familyDetail line shows
📍 Blue circle (↙ arrive / ↗ leave)LocationDistance to the location + place name
⏰ Purple circleTimeFire time (with "+N more" when multi-fire)
🚗 Green circleCarNear-location, or connect / disconnect

The list is ordered with the most actionable items first — location reminders (nearest first), then time reminders (next fire first), then car reminders. Urgent reminders always render with an orange circle background regardless of trigger family so they stand out.

The list refreshes automatically each time your device moves to a new location. Enable Show Inactive in Today in Settings → Preferences to also include inactive-but-today-scheduled reminders in the CarPlay list.
Opening Navigation from CarPlay

Tap any reminder row on the CarPlay screen to open turn-by-turn navigation to its location. Google Maps is used if installed; otherwise your default navigation app launches.

Reminder Alert on the Car Screen

When a reminder fires while CarPlay is active, a full-screen alert appears on the car display showing the reminder title and description. If a reminder fired shortly before you opened Awan on the car screen, that alert is surfaced too, so you don't miss it. Two buttons are available:

ButtonAction
OKDismisses the alert and stops the audio — reminder stays active
DeactivateTurns the reminder off and dismisses the alert
Audio Through Car Speakers

When CarPlay is connected, reminder audio is routed through the car's speakers:

Always allow keeps geofence monitoring active while driving. Check Settings → Permissions to confirm your location access is set to Always.
Shortcuts

Automate with the Shortcuts app.

Awan exposes three App Intents to the iOS Shortcuts app so you can wire it into Personal Automations — no app-launch required.

Available Actions
ActionWhat it does
Fire Car ConnectRuns the same flow as Awan's own onCarConnect detection, firing every active reminder set to "When iPhone connects to my car".
Fire Car DisconnectMirror of the above for onCarDisconnect reminders.
Log Car Parking LocationRecords your current location as a single, always-overwriting parking entry in Saved Locations. Each invocation replaces the previous auto-logged parking — you never accumulate duplicates.
Recommended Setup
  1. Open the Shortcuts app → Automation tab → +Personal Automation.
  2. Choose a trigger such as "When iPhone disconnects from <your car> Bluetooth".
  3. Tap Add Action, search "Awan", and pick Log Car Parking Location (or one of the Fire actions for reminder dispatch).
  4. Turn off Ask Before Running so the automation fires silently in the background.
Because these intents are marked openAppWhenRun = false, they run in the background — your iPhone stays in whatever app you were already using. The Log Parking action grabs a fresh GPS fix before saving so the recorded coordinate is always current.
Subscription

Free to try. Unlimited when you're ready.

Awan lets you explore the full app before asking you to subscribe.

What's free
What requires a subscription
When you tap + or Add Location and you already have one of each, the subscription screen appears. You can dismiss it and continue using the free tier.
Plans & Free Trial

Choose the plan that suits you on the subscription screen:

PlanBilling
MonthlyBilled every month — cancel any time
YearlyBilled once a year — best value

Both plans include a 7-day free trial on first subscription. No charge until the trial ends — cancel any time from the App Store before the trial expires. Current prices are always shown on the subscription screen inside the app.

Legacy Access

Users who purchased Awan before the subscription model launched receive free unlimited access forever (Legacy status). No action needed — the app detects this automatically.

Managing your subscription

Go to Settings → Subscription → Manage Subscription to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel via the App Store. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.

Tips & Tricks

Get more out of Awan.

🎯
Tight radius for precise spots
Use 100–200 m for a specific shop or building. A larger radius may fire too early.
🚨
Urgent for truly critical tasks
Urgent reminders bypass Do Not Disturb. Use them sparingly so they stay meaningful.
🔖
Save your most-visited places
Add Home, Work, and your regular spots once. Creating reminders for them then takes seconds.
🔁
Repeat for important tasks
If you dismiss notifications without acting, turn on Repeat with a 5-minute interval.
Deactivate instead of delete
Seasonal reminders can be deactivated and reactivated later — no need to recreate them.
📊
Check your geofence count
iOS allows only 20 active geofences per app. Check Settings → Permissions to see usage.
FAQ

Common questions.

Why didn't my location reminder fire?
Check: (1) reminder is marked Active, (2) Location is set to Always in Settings → Permissions, (3) Precise Location is enabled (not Approximate) in iOS Settings → Privacy → Location Services, (4) you haven't exceeded the 20-active-geofence limit, (5) radius isn't too small for a moving vehicle — use at least 200 m on motorways. Note: if two nearby places have overlapping radii, entering the shared area may not register as a fresh boundary crossing — shrink the radius so each place is distinct.
Why didn't my time reminder fire (or stop firing)?
Make sure the reminder is Active and that its schedule covers today — a Custom (date range) reminder auto-deactivates after its To date, and a single-day range (From = To) stops after that day. For multiple times a day, add each time as a separate Fire-At row (up to 15). iOS also limits an app to 64 pending notifications total; if you schedule a very large number of times across many reminders, some may be deferred.
Why didn't my car reminder fire?
Car triggers rely on your iPhone detecting a Bluetooth or CarPlay connection change. For the most reliable results, set up a Personal Automation in the Shortcuts app that runs Awan's Fire Car Connect / Fire Car Disconnect action when your car connects or disconnects (see the Shortcuts section). If you pinned the reminder to a nearby saved location, it only fires when you're within about 1 km of that location.
Why does Awan need "Always On" location access?
iOS only processes geofences in the background if the app has Always access. With "When In Use" only, monitoring stops the moment you leave the app. Always access does not mean Awan is constantly tracking you — it only watches the geofence boundaries you set up.
Does Awan drain my battery?
Awan uses CoreLocation's geofencing API, which is battery-efficient. It relies on cell tower and Wi-Fi positioning for coarse boundary checks and only activates GPS when you're near a boundary. Impact is typically minimal.
Can I have more than 20 reminders?
You can save unlimited reminders, but only 20 can be active at the same time — this is an iOS system limit. Deactivate or mark done any reminders you no longer need to free up slots.
What happens to my data?
By default, all reminders and saved locations are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework — nothing leaves your phone. If you enable iCloud Sync in Settings, data is stored in your private iCloud container (accessible only by you) and stays in sync across your Apple devices. Deleting the app removes all local data permanently; iCloud data can be managed via iCloud settings.
The app fired a reminder twice — why?
There are two separate reasons:

Repeat Until Acknowledged is ON — this is intentional. The app schedules up to 5 follow-up notifications at your chosen interval (1, 2, 5, or 10 min) after the initial trigger, until you open one. They fire even if you haven't moved. Adjust in Settings → Notifications.

Repeat Until Acknowledged is OFF — Each reminder fires once per crossing. Once triggered, it won't fire again until you physically exit and re-enter the geofence. If you received two alerts, you genuinely crossed the boundary twice (e.g. you left and returned).
Can I use Awan offline?
Yes. Geofencing uses your device's location hardware and doesn't require an internet connection. The only feature that needs connectivity is the place search when creating a reminder.
